College Program

1. Overview

College students with 30 or more semester hours, or students who applied for but were not awarded a 4-year national scholarship, may be eligible to join the Notre Dame NROTC battalion as a College Program Student.

College Program students do not initially receive the financial benefits of a 4-year national scholarship awardee, but join the battalion to actively pursue a commission as a Naval Officer. While on campus, College Program students are fully integrated into the Battalion of Midshipmen, participating in all military leadership labs, physical training, and unit events.

The primary goal of the College Program is to prepare qualified Midshipmen to successfully compete for three-year or two-year NROTC Side-Load Scholarships or to be awarded Advanced Standing prior to their junior year, which secures their path to commissioning.

2. Eligibility & Basic Requirements

All applicants must meet the baseline criteria for the program. These administrative, age, and physical readiness standards are summarized below:

  • Institutional Enrollment: Must be admitted to, or a current undergraduate student at, the University of Notre Dame, Holy Cross College, or Saint Mary’s College.
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States or be actively in the formal process of becoming a naturalized American citizen.
  • Age Parameters: Must not be older than 27 years old by December 31st of the calendar year in which graduation and commissioning are anticipated.
  • Academic Standing: Applicants already attending college must be in either their Freshman or Sophomore year of study.
  • Physical Standards: Must meet all Navy height/weight and body composition criteria, and be medically qualified for admittance into the armed forces.
  • Fitness Assessment: Must achieve a passing score on the official Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT).

After your document submission is processed and reviewed by unit leadership, a member of our onboarding team will contact you to coordinate interview timelines and physical evaluation milestones.
